“It’s not about one project”: Stijn Baan on why Koppert Cress chooses KUBO

When Koppert Cress starts considering another greenhouse project, KUBO is the first partner it calls. For Managing Director Stijn Baan, that preference is rooted in a long-term relationship, shared ambition and the ability to bring very different requirements together in one greenhouse environment.

Koppert Cress works with a wide variety of microgreens. Some require just one greenhouse bay, while others need five. That calls for flexibility, but also for a partner that understands where the business wants to go next.

Stijn Baan explains what he values in the relationship with KUBO, how both companies challenge each other and why he is already looking forward to the next build.

If a fellow entrepreneur asks why you choose KUBO, what do you say?
We’ve had a partnership with KUBO for a very long time. They’re the first company we think of when we start planning to build again. The first we call.

What makes KUBO truly unique is their long-term vision. It’s not about doing that one project. It’s about making sure we can always find each other again for the projects ahead.

What do you recognise in KUBO as a company that you don’t encounter with other suppliers?
Beyond what we build together, we try to move the sector forward together. We challenge each other on that as well.

The frontrunner role they have, and the role we aspire to, work very well together. You have to move forward together.

What has KUBO made possible that you would not have been able to come up with yourselves?
What KUBO makes possible is the synergy between all the different ideas that are out there.

It is literally the structure where everything comes together.

What would not be possible without the specific characteristics of this greenhouse?
For some specialities, one bay is enough, while for others we need five bays.

So we need to be flexible with the spaces we use for them. That whole puzzle is something we definitely challenged KUBO on.

How many countries do you reach from this location, and what makes that possible?
We can supply all of Europe with our products, as well as the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

What has this collaboration brought your company beyond just a new greenhouse?
What the collaboration has brought us is that we can genuinely say that, with our greenhouse, we are among the frontrunners in horticulture.

Not only Dutch horticulture, but horticulture as a whole.

Every time we want to build a new greenhouse, we want the latest technology in it as well. And once again, we’ve managed to do that.

So we have pushed the boundaries further here.

I’m incredibly proud of that, and I can’t wait for the next build.

Moving forward together

For Koppert Cress, the relationship with KUBO is not defined by one completed project. The value lies in being able to challenge one another, bring different ideas together and continue the relationship when the next opportunity to build arises.

What should your next greenhouse make possible?

Every grower, crop strategy and operation brings different requirements.

The starting point is understanding what the greenhouse needs to support today and where the business wants to go next.
